Laser welding of plastics in medical technology

The laser is now an established tool in many areas of production. Due to its high precision, the locally well-dosable energy input and last but not least its cleanliness, this tool has secured a firm place in production. The process works particle-free and is predestined for production in clean rooms. It is therefore the key to production in the medtech industry. Medical devices and consumables can be manufactured particularly hygienically by laser. We see a trend towards smart solutions for the end customer, especially in the area of point-of-care and drug-delivery systems. These solutions require a high packing density for the necessary and sensitive electronics and mechatronics. For the final assembly of such systems, usually only adhesive bonding or laser welding is used. Since laser welding is particle-free, clean and free of additives, it is the first choice in this sector.

Laser welding with a wavelength of 2 µm is particularly exciting for medical products because no additive is required here. The so-called clear-clear welding can be used for many common materials (PP, MABS, COC) and is suitable for the production of microfluidics. Also due to the constant development of new treatment methods, the importance of reliable production processes is rapidly increasing in the healthcare sector. Latest equipment for medical technology

The new EVO 0550, a fully integrable laser module for example, is particularly suitable for use in the medical technology and pharmaceutical industries. Depending on the application, the module can be equipped with different laser sources and optics and thus offers far-reaching application possibilities, especially for radially symmetrical components or for use on an X-Y axis for contour welding.

The EVO 0550 is a laser module with fixed optics and fits into any production environment. It can be used to produce sterile packaging, microfluidic components and lab-on-a-chip systems. The laser welding module also allows comprehensive documentation, and is characterized by reliability.

Due to the compact design of the laser head, the new EVO 0550 fits into any production environment, and is predestined for use in 24-hour high-volume production.

The laser module is equipped with the EVOSYS Next Generation HMI user interface, which is also new. This facilitates operation and visualization during welding with the Evosys laser systems.

Three cockpits give a central overview and provide the operator with information tailored to his field of activity - process, production and statistics. The EVOSYS Next Generation HMI also handles the visualization and evaluation of the process data, which eliminates the need for additional hardware. With the new HMI, EVOSYS not only offers a uniform solution with high operating convenience and a modern look and feel, but also a solution to master the challenges of digitalization.
